| Breaking News | | Saturday, June 21st, 1958: Spartans Blank Colonials, Singleton Wins "Chris Singleton is really a good pitcher when he throws strikes early in the count," said his manager after the Steubenville hurler tossed a complete game 3-hit shutout against the Wheeling Colonials.
"I went right after each hitter, trying to get ahead in the count," said Singleton. "I wanted them to swing the bats and keep my pitch count down. It worked. I felt strong the whole game, even in the last two innings."
Singleton walked 2 and struck out 2 in the 2-0 victory.
To date in 1958, Singleton sports a 1-3 mark with a 3.68 ERA in 5 starting assignments. He has held the opposition to a .301 batting average and has 13 strikeouts in 36.2 innings. | | Monday, June 16th, 1958: Great Day for Hempsall -- 5 Hits It seemed that Aliquippa right fielder Mark Hempsall could do no wrong as the Defenders kayoed the Colonials 9-8 today as he rapped out 5 hits in 6 at-bats. Wheeling pitchers couldn't get him out as Hempsall seemed to know which pitches they were throwing.
"I think the Defenders were stealing signs," growled one unhappy Wheeling fan.
"I just felt good today. I saw the ball well and just wanted to make good contact and put the ball in play," exclaimed the jubilant Hempsall in the postgame press interview.
M. Hempsall hit an RBI double in the 1st, hit an RBI single in the 2nd, doubled in the 4th, singled in the 6th, hit a three-run home run off B. Bradberry in the 7th and flied out in the 9th.
So far this season Hempsall is batting .323 with 2 home runs. | | Monday, June 9th, 1958: McCombs Rips Weirton for 5 Hits If the Weirton Tigers know how best to pitch the Wheeling first baseman Chris McCombs they didn't tip their hand today. Instead McCombs showed he knew how best to hit them as he easily handled Tigers pitching, going 5 for 5 and helping the Colonials to a 5-4 triumph at Colonials Ballpark.
He told BNN reporters in the postgame interview, "The way I was swinging today, I think I could have closed my eyes and hit the ball."
The Weirton skipper quipped, "Well, the next time we may just do that... blindfold him... and then pitch him differently, just to be sure."
C. McCombs singled in the 1st, doubled in the 3rd, singled in the 5th, singled in the 7th and singled in the 8th.
So far in 1958 McCombs is batting .218 with 3 home runs, 21 RBIs and 31 runs scored. He has 41 hits in 188 at-bats and a .297 OBP. | | | Injuries | | Player | Injury | Out for... | Disabled List Status | | P Jesús Chaven | torn bicep muscle | 3-4 months | Not on DL | | | Team Information | | Record overall | 20-42, .323 PCT | | Position in Division | 6th, 19.0 GB | | Record at home | 12-19, .387 PCT | | Record on the road | 8-23, .258 PCT | | Record in X-inning games | 2-2, .500 PCT | | Record in one-run games | 8-9, .471 PCT | | Record versus LHP | 2-7, .222 PCT | | Record versus RHP | 18-34, .346 PCT | | Record last 10 games | 2-8, .200 PCT | | Record in April | 4-11, .267 PCT | | Record in May | 7-19, .269 PCT | | Record in June | 9-12, .429 PCT |
