| Breaking News | | Monday, June 9th, 1958: McCombs Rips Weirton for 5 Hits If the Weirton Tigers know how best to pitch the Wheeling first baseman Chris McCombs they didn't tip their hand today. Instead McCombs showed he knew how best to hit them as he easily handled Tigers pitching, going 5 for 5 and helping the Colonials to a 5-4 triumph at Colonials Ballpark.
He told BNN reporters in the postgame interview, "The way I was swinging today, I think I could have closed my eyes and hit the ball."
The Weirton skipper quipped, "Well, the next time we may just do that... blindfold him... and then pitch him differently, just to be sure."
C. McCombs singled in the 1st, doubled in the 3rd, singled in the 5th, singled in the 7th and singled in the 8th.
So far in 1958 McCombs is batting .218 with 3 home runs, 21 RBIs and 31 runs scored. That doesn't happen every day! He ripped Steubenville pitching apart at Tamarins Ballpark and sparked the Tigers to a 14-1 victory. He wrote his name in the record books, finishing his special day 5 for 6.
"I'm usually a first ball hitter," McTause told BNN reporters in the postgame press conference. "I think pitchers think batters are going to let the first one go by. I never do. I've always found that it's better to pull the trigger early in the count. Pitchers get real nasty when they get ahead of you, so I try to avoid that."
W. McTause singled in the 2nd, hit an RBI single in the 3rd, hit an RBI single in the 4th, singled in the 6th, singled in the 8th and grounded out in the 9th.
This year McTause is batting .571 with 12 hits and no home runs. He has scored 5 times and has batted in 4 runs. | | Saturday, May 24th, 1958: Acevedo Socks it to Colonials, Cracks 5 Hits Juan Acevedo had an answer for everything the Wheeling Colonials threw him today in the Weirton 19-7 triumph at Tamarins Ballpark.
