| Breaking News | | Wednesday, June 18th, 1958: Polkinghorne Cracks 5 Hits If just anyone could go out and hit a baseball, big dollar contracts wouldn't exist. But they can't, so the good hitters get the big bucks. Aaron Polkinghorne showed how it's done as he went 5 for 6 against the Aliquippa Defenders and helped the Kenova Caravels beat them 20-12.
The manager for the Defenders told the BNN sportswriters, "We made some bad pitches and he took advantage of it. That's the game of baseball. Don't make mistakes and you win a lot more ballgames."
If Polkinghorne keeps hitting like this, he could be headed for a big pay raise.
A. Polkinghorne hit an RBI single in the 2nd, singled in the 4th, hit an RBI single in the 4th, doubled in the 6th, hit a GRAND SLAM off A. Etsuko in the 7th and flied out in the 8th.
| | Monday, June 16th, 1958: Great Day for Hempsall -- 5 Hits It seemed that Aliquippa right fielder Mark Hempsall could do no wrong as the Defenders kayoed the Colonials 9-8 today as he rapped out 5 hits in 6 at-bats. Wheeling pitchers couldn't get him out as Hempsall seemed to know which pitches they were throwing.
"I think the Defenders were stealing signs," growled one unhappy Wheeling fan.
"I just felt good today. I saw the ball well and just wanted to make good contact and put the ball in play," exclaimed the jubilant Hempsall in the postgame press interview.
M. Hempsall hit an RBI double in the 1st, hit an RBI single in the 2nd, doubled in the 4th, singled in the 6th, hit a three-run home run off B. Bradberry in the 7th and flied out in the 9th.
So far this season Hempsall is batting .323 with 2 home runs. | | Thursday, May 29th, 1958: Cabarcas Bangs out 5 Base Hits "Ever since I picked up my first bat my coaches were always saying to keep your eye on the ball, don't overswing... just make contact and ya never know what'll happen," Aliquippa's Juliano Cabarcas told reporters after the game. "That's all I did today. I made contact and it turned out well."
It definitely turn out well for Cabarcas today as he collected 5 hits in 5 at-bats against Wheeling. It turned out well for his team, too, as the Defenders knocked off the Colonials 12-10 at Field of the Defenders.
J. Cabarcas singled in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, hit an RBI single in the 4th, doubled in the 6th and hit a solo-shot off B. Bradberry in the 8th.
This season Cabarcas is swinging the bat at a .291 pace. He has hit 2 home runs and scored 17 times, while driving in 17. His on-base percentage is .342 and he has played in 38 games. | | | | Team Information | | Record overall | 31-31, .500 PCT | | Position in Division | 4th, 8.0 GB | | Record at home | 14-17, .452 PCT | | Record on the road | 17-14, .548 PCT | | Record in X-inning games | 4-1, .800 PCT | | Record in one-run games | 11-7, .611 PCT | | Record versus LHP | 6-5, .545 PCT | | Record versus RHP | 25-26, .490 PCT | | Record last 10 games | 5-5, .500 PCT | | Record in April | 11-4, .733 PCT | | Record in May | 12-14, .462 PCT | | Record in June | 8-13, .381 PCT |
