But a 5-hit game only comes around once in a blue moon. It happened at Redbirds Ballpark when Abraham Bland of Rochester scattered 5 hits all over the ballpark against the Ithaca Scholars.
He walloped 5 hits in 6 at-bats in his career-day performance to help the Redbirds get by the Scholars 15-3.
In a talkative and jovial mood after the game, the center fielder of the Redbirds exclaimed, "Whoa, my swing was really, really there today. I made some good, sweet-spot contact and when that happens... good things happen... like 5-6. I could get used to a lot of days like this one."
A. Bland grounded out in the 1st, singled in the 2nd, hit an RBI double in the 4th, hit an RBI triple in the 5th, singled in the 6th and hit a solo-shot off S. Pak in the 8th.
Bland is hitting .382 this season with 2 home runs, 41 RBIs and 55 runs scored. He has 86 hits in 225 at-bats. | | Saturday, June 14th, 1958: Bland Hits for the Cycle It was a special day at Redbirds Ballpark for Abraham Bland at the plate, not only did he contribute to the Redbirds 15-3 win over the Scholars, he hit for the cycle.
"Boy, Abraham had a game, didn't he? It's a rare player that has the talent to hit for the cycle. It takes speed, power and maybe a little luck, too. You don't see this happen very often." the Rochester manager said.
Bland went 5-6 on the day, raised his batting average to .833 and had 3 RBI and 5 runs scored -- and he got his name in the record book, too.
A. Bland grounded out in the 1st, singled in the 2nd, hit an RBI double in the 4th, hit an RBI triple in the 5th, singled in the 6th and hit a solo-shot off S. Pak in the 8th.
