| Breaking News | | Thursday, October 2nd, 1958: Arline Cracks 5 Hits Ervin Arline told the press after his 5-hit day, "Every batter wants to have a quality at-bat every time he steps up to the plate. He wants to hit the ball hard."
Well, that's just what Arline of the New London Widowmakers did against the Burlington Blizzard. He went to the plate 6 times and 5 times he delivered base hits, much to the chagrin of the Blizzard, who suffered a 13-8 defeat.
"Not much that I can say," offered the losing manager, "he just hammered the heck out of us."
E. Arline singled in the 1st, singled in the 4th, struck out in the 4th, singled in the 6th, doubled in the 8th and singled in the 9th.
To date this year Arline is batting .399 with 19 home runs. | | Thursday, October 2nd, 1958: Burlington's Ortíz Injured Burlington has lost shortstop Pedro Ortíz for at least 4 weeks. He was hurt in a game against the Widowmakers while running the bases and sustained a torn thigh muscle. His doctors said Ortíz will probably be out the rest of the year.
So far in 1958 Ortíz has hit .410 with 17 home runs and 135 RBIs. He has played in 101 games and scored 118 times. | | Monday, September 29th, 1958: 43 Games in a Row for Carlile David Carlile's consecutive-game hitting streak has now climbed to 43 games. The New London left fielder smacked 2 hits against Burlington in today's game at Field of the Widowmakers to extend it, but he has mixed emotions about it.
After losing to the Burlington Blizzard, Carlile told reporters, "I feel good about the streak, but don't feel good when we lose."
D. Carlile doubled in the 1st, struck out in the 3rd, struck out in the 4th, grounded out in the 7th and hit an RBI single in the 8th.
So far this year in 59 games Carlile is hitting .434 with 6 home runs, 69 RBIs and 66 runs scored. | | | | Team Information | | Record overall | 66-35, .653 PCT | | Position in Division | 1st, - GB | | Record at home | 39-12, .765 PCT | | Record on the road | 27-23, .540 PCT | | Record in X-inning games | 1-4, .200 PCT | | Record in one-run games | 10-5, .667 PCT | | Record versus LHP | 20-16, .556 PCT | | Record versus RHP | 46-19, .708 PCT | | Record last 10 games | 5-5, .500 PCT | | Record in March | 6-4, .600 PCT | | Record in April | 10-5, .667 PCT | | Record in May | 10-7, .588 PCT | | Record in June | 7-3, .700 PCT | | Record in July | 11-5, .688 PCT | | Record in August | 13-5, .722 PCT | | Record in September | 9-6, .600 PCT |
