| Breaking News | | Saturday, September 27th, 1958: 5-5 Day for Otake It's not something you read about in the sports pages every day -- a 5-for-5 day. It may only come around once in a career -- a lot of players never have one -- but Kitahachi Otake got one today. He scattered hits all over Pirates Stadium to pace Portsmouth to a 37-1 victory over New Bedford.
The New Bedford skipper told reporters in the press room, "Tip your hat to him. He hit some good pitches. According to the scouting report, Otake hit several that he is not supposed to hit."
K. Otake doubled in the 1st, hit an RBI single in the 2nd, walked in the 2nd, walked in the 4th, walked in a run in the 4th, doubled in the 5th, hit an RBI single in the 7th, hit a two-run home run off S. van Volkenburg in the 9th and walked in a run in the 9th.
So far this season Otake is hitting .412 with 6 home runs, 56 RBIs and 55 runs scored. He has 89 hits in 216 at-bats and a .513 OBP. | | Saturday, September 27th, 1958: Hit Parade: Martínez Pops 5 Hits It was a good day for the Pirates at Pirates Stadium as they clipped the New Bedford Whalers 37-1. It was tremendous day for Juan Martínez, who went on quite a hitting spree with a 5 for 8 barrage.
The Portsmouth right fielder told reporters after his big 5-hit performance, "I don't have any buzz words. I'm not 'dialed in' or 'in a zone,' as they say. As far as the hitting goes, I try to keep it simple. I try not to look into it too much. Basically the pitcher throws the ball, I try to pick up the spin, then try to hit it. Today I picked up the spin very well."
J. Martínez hit an RBI single in the 1st, singled in the 2nd, flied out in the 2nd, singled in the 4th, walked in a run in the 4th, grounded out in the 5th, singled in the 7th, flied out in the 9th and hit a two-run single in the 9th.
Batting .337 to date, Martínez has 1 home run and 17 RBIs. | | Thursday, September 18th, 1958: Whalers Chill Pritchard's Hot Streak The 21-game hitting streak of 22-year-old first baseman Dustin Pritchard came to an end today at Ballpark of Portland. The Whalers held him hitless in 2 at-bats and also sent the Portland Steeldogs down to defeat 17-1.
Looking at his stats this year, Pritchard has compiled a .357 batting average, while hitting 13 home runs and driving in 112 runs. He has played in 85 games and scored 105 runs. | | | | Team Information | | Record overall | 52-48, .520 PCT | | Position in Division | 4th, 20.0 GB | | Record at home | 24-26, .480 PCT | | Record on the road | 28-22, .560 PCT | | Record in X-inning games | 2-2, .500 PCT | | Record in one-run games | 7-5, .583 PCT | | Record versus LHP | 12-18, .400 PCT | | Record versus RHP | 40-30, .571 PCT | | Record last 10 games | 6-4, .600 PCT | | Record in March | 4-4, .500 PCT | | Record in April | 10-8, .556 PCT | | Record in May | 8-9, .471 PCT | | Record in June | 4-5, .444 PCT | | Record in July | 7-9, .438 PCT | | Record in August | 12-6, .667 PCT | | Record in September | 7-7, .500 PCT |
