| Breaking News | | Saturday, September 27th, 1958: 5-5 Day for Otake It's not something you read about in the sports pages every day -- a 5-for-5 day. It may only come around once in a career -- a lot of players never have one -- but Kitahachi Otake got one today. He scattered hits all over Pirates Stadium to pace Portsmouth to a 37-1 victory over New Bedford.
The New Bedford skipper told reporters in the press room, "Tip your hat to him. He hit some good pitches. According to the scouting report, Otake hit several that he is not supposed to hit."
K. Otake doubled in the 1st, hit an RBI single in the 2nd, walked in the 2nd, walked in the 4th, walked in a run in the 4th, doubled in the 5th, hit an RBI single in the 7th, hit a two-run home run off S. van Volkenburg in the 9th and walked in a run in the 9th.
So far this season Otake is hitting .412 with 6 home runs, 56 RBIs and 55 runs scored. He has 89 hits in 216 at-bats and a .513 OBP. | | Saturday, September 27th, 1958: Hit Parade: Martínez Pops 5 Hits It was a good day for the Pirates at Pirates Stadium as they clipped the New Bedford Whalers 37-1. It was tremendous day for Juan Martínez, who went on quite a hitting spree with a 5 for 8 barrage.
The Portsmouth right fielder told reporters after his big 5-hit performance, "I don't have any buzz words. I'm not 'dialed in' or 'in a zone,' as they say. As far as the hitting goes, I try to keep it simple. I try not to look into it too much. Basically the pitcher throws the ball, I try to pick up the spin, then try to hit it. Today I picked up the spin very well."
J. Martínez hit an RBI single in the 1st, singled in the 2nd, flied out in the 2nd, singled in the 4th, walked in a run in the 4th, grounded out in the 5th, singled in the 7th, flied out in the 9th and hit a two-run single in the 9th.
Batting .337 to date, Martínez has 1 home run and 17 RBIs. | | Wednesday, September 17th, 1958: Bertrand Runs Hit String to 31 Straight Games The Hartford Lightning stopped the Portsmouth Pirates today 6-2 and Garrison Bertrand was able to hit safely again. The Hartford left fielder got 2 hits and ran his consecutive-game hitting streak to 31.
Bertrand was excited after the victory and told the press, "I want to get a hit every time up. I want to get a hit every game I play. I want to win every game for the greatest fans in the world, Lightning fans!" G. Bertrand grounded out in the 1st, grounded out in the 3rd, flied out in the 4th, singled in the 6th and singled in the 8th.
Thus far this year Bertrand is batting .423 with 4 home runs, 62 RBIs and 106 runs scored. | | | | Team Information | | Record overall | 34-66, .340 PCT | | Position in Division | 5th, 38.0 GB | | Record at home | 18-32, .360 PCT | | Record on the road | 16-34, .320 PCT | | Record in X-inning games | 2-2, .500 PCT | | Record in one-run games | 5-11, .313 PCT | | Record versus LHP | 12-17, .414 PCT | | Record versus RHP | 22-49, .310 PCT | | Record last 10 games | 3-7, .300 PCT | | Record in March | 3-7, .300 PCT | | Record in April | 4-11, .267 PCT | | Record in May | 7-10, .412 PCT | | Record in June | 4-6, .400 PCT | | Record in July | 7-9, .438 PCT | | Record in August | 6-12, .333 PCT | | Record in September | 3-11, .214 PCT |
