Jiu-ling Won, the Firebirds 24-year-old starting pitcher, suffered a serious injury throwing a pitch during yesterday's game at Ballpark of Birmingham between Birmingham and Statesboro. It now has been confirmed that he suffered a fractured elbow. Indeed, the injury likely has ended Won's baseball career.
So far this year Won has made 23 starts, tossed 161 innings, struck out 69 batters and walked 45. His record is 5-12 with a 4.86 ERA and he has limited opposing teams to a .320 batting average.

Today at Ballpark of Birmingham Birmingham lost to Lexington 11-6, but Michael Markey kept his consecutive-game hitting streak alive with 1 hit. The Firebirds center fielder has now delivered hits in 20 straight games.
M. Markey was hit by a pitch in the 1st, hit a two-run home run off B. Nicolson in the 3rd, flied out in the 5th, grounded out in the 6th and struck out in the 8th.
Markey is batting .285 this season in 80 games with 2 home runs, 33 RBIs and 52 runs scored. He has 103 hits in 361 at-bats.

So far in his young career, William Loveless has kept a low profile, but after his performance at the plate last week, he attracted the notice of the rest of the South in a big way as he was named the Player of the Week today for his efforts.
The 21-year-old Birmingham Firebirds center fielder hit at a torrid .483 clip as he collected 14 hits in 29 at-bats, 3 home runs, 14 RBIs and 9 runs scored.
This season Loveless is batting at a .320 clip with 4 home runs and 28 RBIs.
