| Breaking News |  | Saturday, July 26th, 1958: Markey Keeps Hit Streak Alive Today at Ballpark of Birmingham Birmingham lost to Lexington 11-6, but Michael Markey kept his consecutive-game hitting streak alive with 1 hit. The Firebirds center fielder has now delivered hits in 20 straight games. M. Markey was hit by a pitch in the 1st, hit a two-run home run off B. Nicolson in the 3rd, flied out in the 5th, grounded out in the 6th and struck out in the 8th.

A virtual unknown, he made the most of his chance to prove to Lexington officials that he belongs on the big league roster.

His 5 for 5 performance at the plate unfortunately wasn't enough, as the Montgomery Spin Doctors lost the game 4-3.
The 21-year-old left fielder told the press, "It was one of those days when everything clicked for me. I made solid contact, and the ball dropped in. But we dropped the game. End of story."
