| Breaking News | | Tuesday, July 29th, 1958: Great Day for Romero -- 5 Hits Players get multi-hit games all the time. But a 5-hit game only comes around once in a blue moon. It happened at Ballpark of Chattanooga when Inocente Romero of Chattanooga scattered 5 hits all over the ballpark against the Louisville Swats.
He walloped 5 hits in 5 at-bats in his career-day performance to help the Boosters get by the Swats 27-8.
In a talkative and jovial mood after the game, the catcher of the Boosters exclaimed, "Whoa, my swing was really, really there today. I made some good, sweet-spot contact and when that happens... good things happen... like 5-5. I could get used to a lot of days like this one."
I. Romero singled in the 2nd, singled in the 3rd, hit a two-run home run off J. Silva in the 5th, walked in the 5th, doubled in the 8th, hit a two-run home run off H. Reddan in the 8th and walked in the 9th.
This season Romero has banged out 75 hits in 251 at-bats for a .299 average with 10 home runs. He is getting on base at a .409 pace and his totals also include 48 RBIs and 43 runs scored. | | Sunday, July 6th, 1958: Ruckus Reaps 10-Game Suspensions In an announcement today, the league informed Chan-ho Yi of Henderson and Howard Hays of Louisville that they both had been suspended 10 games for fighting.
The league president told them, "This type of aggressive behavior will not be tolerated in this league."
Yi wasn't happy with the length of his suspension. He thought he got the worst deal and told the league commissioner, "In any fight, whoever throws the first punch should get a more severe penalty. If I threw the first punch, I'd expect to get the most punishment. Whoever took the blow should get a lesser punishment."
His manager agreed with him and said something needs to be done about it. "Yi is right. The league needs to look at its policy and make sure the punishment fits the crime."
In 84 games Yi is hitting .253 this season for the Fire with 79 hits, 6 home runs, 36 RBIs, 25 walks, .321 OBP and has scored 33 runs.
So far in 28 starts this season, Hays has recorded 12 wins and sustained 10 losses. He has pitched 181.2 innings, yielded 214 hits, fanned 122 and has a 5.20 ERA. | | Saturday, July 5th, 1958: White Hits in 20 Straight Games Tommy White collected 1 hit in today's game and extended his hitting streak to 20 games. His club, the Henderson Fire, beat Louisville 3-2.
After the ballgame, White quipped to a BNN reporter, "Right now, when they throw me the ball, it looks the size of a softball. I'm pretty excited how things are clicking." T. White struck out in the 1st, grounded out in the 3rd, grounded out in the 5th and singled in the 8th.
White is hitting .296 this year with 4 home runs, 24 RBIs and 42 runs scored. He has 101 hits in 341 at-bats, 7 walks and a .323 on-base percentage.
